Types of Lawnmowers

Lawnmowers began as human-driven machines which are used to
cut grass. While they still perform the same basic
function, many varieties of lawnmowers have been developed
throughout the decades in order to cater to clients with
different needs as well as to take advantage of new
advances in technology.

Below is a list of some of the most common types of
lawnmowers.

1. Reel/cylinder

- this is one of the most basic and common types of mowers
around. This maybe powered several ways such as human-power
and others by using an internal combustion engine. It
basically works by having a roller with blades which then
cuts the grass.

2. Rotary

- unlike the reel mower, rotary mowers have rotary blades
to cut the grass. Most mowers of this type are powered by
internal combustion engines although some operate using
electric power. Typical residential-type rotary mowers cut
the grass and either discharge it on the lawn or keep it in
a bag.

3. Ride-on

- this type of mower has a size that is fit for the job that
it can do. Ride-on mowers are typically used on larger
lawns such as school grounds. Because of this kind of
demand, they are usually fitted with several blades to cut
a wider area.

4. Hover mower

- as its name suggests, this type of mower hovers over the
ground to cut the grass. While they may look like novelty
items, hover mowers do a good job at cutting tall grass and
even shrubs because of their unique ability to float.

How to Properly Mow the Lawn

Mowing ones lawn has somewhat become an art of sorts. While others may choose to simply mow their way along the
grass and disregard what happens, properly mowing the lawn is important especially in keeping the grass and the ground healthy.

Want some tips on how to do that? Well here are some of them.

1. Before mowing your lawn, remove rocks and sticks that may get in the way. Doing this prevents the materials from getting hurled by the mower.

It is something that could be fatal and therefore should be avoided.

2. Keep your lawn healthy by not cutting the grass too short. In general, leave about a half of an inch of grass sticking out of the ground.

Anything shorter could kill your grass and destroy your lawn.

3. If you find the activity of mowing your lawn as something therapeutic, try not to be overeager about it.

You actually don’t have to cut the grass every week; just cut it when the grass begins to look too unkempt. Give you grass time to grow and they surely will grow healthy.

4. Don’t throw the cut grass away. While it may seem that it helps in keeping your lawn looking neat and tidy, you should keep it on top of the grass.

Once the cut grass decomposes, it will act as mulch or a fertilizer for your lawn.

5. Finally, try to keep your mowing pattern as varied as possible everytime you do this activity. It keeps the growth of your grass straight. Not all gardeners agree on this aspect, though.

Lawnmower Racing

Tired of the usual and boring task of mowing loans? We’ll
there’s an exciting alternative to that, and it’s called
lawnmower racing.

Lawnmower racing is basically just racing around a track
using ride-on mowers. These mowers are the same as stock
mowers expect for the blades which are removed when racing
for safety purposes.

This type of racing has been around for quite some time
already. It was invented in West Sussex, England, UK in
1973 by a number of young men who complained of the high
costs involved in getting into motorsports.

So they formed the British Lawnmower Racing Association as
an answer to their problem. The association designed their
rules to be as cheap as possible, which is true to their
aim of having a cost-effective form of motorsport.

Then there’s the North West Lawn Mower Racing Association
which was created soon after its proponent was formed.

This sports’ popularity has since spread across the globe
beginning with the United States to which the
petrol-stabilizer maker Sta-bil brought in 1992.

It has become widely-accepted in the country and
organizations such as the US Lawnmower Racing Association
were formed there.

Aside from removing the blades, there are also some
modifications made to the lawnmower to improve its
performance. An example of which is changing the pulleys of
the lawnmower to make it go faster.

Also, mechanical transmission is preferred by lawnmower
racing enthusiasts over hydrostatic ones because the former
improves the mowers speed much better than the latter.
